I am thrilled to announce that I will be moving my studio to a new location; the quiet, quaint country village of Elmvale, Ontario.

The new studio will be located at 4 Queen St. West, just west of the main intersection of Hwy 27 and Queen St. West, also known as Country Road 92 - the road to Wasaga Beach. The building was most recently a hardware store that many people in the area will remember. It was purchased by Advantage Homes and completely renovated and updated, yet in keeping with the historical nature of the building.

We should be open for business on December 1, 2010. The more than 600 sqft space will be split into a reception area and studio, much larger than my current space so I'll be able to handle larger family groups, commercial work or other projects requiring more space than I have at the moment.

I'll post photos and progress reports as we get closer to opening as well as new contact information, phone number, etc. as things fall into place.

I'll still be servicing Barrie and the surrounding area, but from a more central location to my market area. Although it may seem out-of-the-way, it really is only 15 minutes outside of Barrie and in many cases, can be easier and faster to get to than travelling through Barrie. There's free parking on the main street as well as parking areas behind the building.

Accreditation by the PPOC:
"The award proves that the photographer is capable of delivering above average quality photographs in a chosen category of photography.
Some of the criteria judges use in assessing Accreditation submissions are: impact, style, presentation, creativity, composition, centre of interest, colour balance, lighting, subject matter, print quality, technique, and story telling."

The category of Fine Art / Photo Decor is defined as:

"Fine art photographs may consist of unusual photographs, individual images or a series of images. The range of styles and treatments varies greatly, from the classic B/W scenes to more unconventional images. In fact, conventional beauty, formal design and familiar subjects are often not components of fine art photographs and can include painterly effects, soft-focus, journalistic, snapshot type images, bizarre and erotic images and other unconventional approaches. I was browsing through some older images this morning and the thumbnail for this one caught my eye. It's a photograph of the Canada Geese display at the Eaton Centre in downtown Toronto. It was an ok image - but by using some techniques that weren't available when I photographed it (2002) created a much more interesting image.

Digital photography has evolved into something much greater than traditional photography. The endless possibilities have enabled the modern photographer to take their creativity further than ever before.

Industrial Robotics: Challenges

Large scale industrial robotics photography has many challenges. In most cases, these items are too large, or valuable, to dismantle and bring to the studio, so we have to bring the studio to the client.
This 'machine' was assembled and tested in the client's manufacturing facility. It had to be photographed where it stood.
In other words - concrete floor, bad (fluorescent) lighting, dust, steel beams, a chip-board (un-painted) background and reflections of other machinery, tools, lights, etc. reflected not only in the glass, but also in the steel and aluminum frame of the unit.
This was photographed using 3 strobes and 2 speed-lights. Post production work included reducing or eliminating glare and reflections to the point of rebuilding some of the structure frame within the image, close-cropped to insert a graduated background, slight perspective control, improve contrast and then optimized for print and web.

KIDS HELP PHONE - MILITARY EDITION!

Today we captured the final instalment of the 'Guns & Hoses Challenge' for the upcoming Walk for Kids Help Phone on May 2nd in Barrie. Of course, not to be outdone by our 'civilian forces' our troops from Canadian Forces Base Borden were quick to take up the challenge as well.
It was great photographing these fine soldiers as they are from the same unit my Dad belonged to when he was a member of the Armed Forces - the Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (E.M.E.). Back when my Dad was in the unit, it was called the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers (R.C.E.M.E.). This particular group consisted of Weapon Techs and we photographed them in front of one of the historic cannons at the Canadian Forces School of Electrical Mechanical Engineers (CFSEME).

WALK for KIDS HELP PHONE, MAY 2, 2010

Today I'm proud to participate in a very worthwhile cause, the Walk for Kid's Help Phone taking place on May 2nd, 2010 all across Canada, including right here in Barrie.

As part of the event, there will be the "Guns & Hoses" Challenge featuring the men and women that serve our community in so many ways. This photo is the first group that we photographed - the Barrie Police Service - featuring the Police Chief himself along with four of his posse. Had a great time in Toronto last week photographing the Cosmopolitan and Pantages Hotels. I've uploaded a few of the image to my facebook gallery under the Commercial Album if you'd like to take a look. Celebrities such as Elton John and Queen Latifah have stayed in the Penthouse Suites of the Cosmo and they both have some amazing rooms, spa and architecture to photograph. And no, I didn't get to stay in the Penthouse suite! :(

What a sweetheart! Channing came in for her portrait this week and what a pleasure to photograph. The entire session lasted about 15 minutes, tops, but in the that 15 minutes we had an amazing amount of keepers considering she is only 11 months old. This is one of my many favourites.

Tiffany & Sean's Engagement Portrait

What an amazing location!
I travelled to Tazewell, Virginia (USA) over Christmas to photograph Tiffany & Sean's Engagement portrait.
This image is one of my favourite and works extremely well in B&W. On Tiffany's father's farm is a this amazing tree and what a great 'prop' for the photo-shoot.
Copper & Coal (their Black & Chocolate Labs) were semi-cooperative and we managed to get a few great images with them too. They didn't sit still long though. It was quite the hill we climbed on the ATVs (thought I was going to go off backwards with my equipment on my back!) but well worth the effort. With any luck, during the wedding next July, we'll return to the tree for some great wedding photographs.

Fallen Giant

Tiffany & Sean were gracious enough to allow me some time to photograph this amazing tree (guess they could see me drooling at the prospects). The deep contrast between the sky and tree made this one of my favourites. The trunk was large enough to accommodate the couple as well as the two dogs, which didn't have any trouble running up and down it.

Muskoka Morning

I love getting up early in the morning and taking off on a trip. This was one of the images I took on my trip to Sudbury a couple weeks ago to speak to the Professional Photographers of Ontario, North-Eastern Ontario Branch. It was great being invited up to talk about my successes and share ideas with other professional photographers.

This image was taken on the way to Sudbury that morning. Hard to believe a scene like this can be found at the side of the highway - and yet, I was standing on the highway side of the guard rail to capture this awesome scene. It's hard to tell on the web image, but on my computer you can 'just' see some of the fall colour in the trees shaded by the mist in the background. The image looks B&W - but this if full colour! One of my favourite images from this trip.

Lisa and Mark were married on September 19, 2009 at Michael Chau's Piano Emporium in Vaughn, Ontario. The piano shop provided a unique background to the wedding and the $100K Grand Piano was a VERY nice prop! I really love this image though - note Lisa's choice of footwear.

What a great kid to photograph. Within half an hour we had dozens of wonderful images. He had no problem running around barefoot, over gravel, grass, mulch, whatever - and (almost) always smiling.

Although I created this series of portraits a couple years ago now, this little guy's expression have stuck in my mind all this time. I knew I wanted to do something more than simply post a couple of sample images. Now that I have the ability to add slideshows to my website, I thought this was the perfect way to display this set of portraits.

Spring - finally here! What great weather we've been having. Started looking back through some of my images from last year and a found a series of water photos that I really liked. I love the way the waves are coming in and the water running off the large rock. The colour of the water is beautiful - typical of Georgian Bay.

I had the great privilege last month to photograph an event which included a performance by The Canadian Tenors. Although I don't consider myself a fan of this type of music, I was totally blown away by the sound coming from these four talented Canadians. This is one of those rare instances where the live performance was better than the recorded CD.

I've put together a slideshow of their performance and set it to their song, "I Only Know How To Love".

Photographing an artist

I think the greatest challenge for a photographer is photographing another artist... especially an artist that works in a different 'medium' than you do. Corey is a musician, a young musician, with loads of talent and a lifetime of creativity ahead of him. How do you photograph something like that?

Snow-Boarding

This past Tuesday I enjoyed an afternoon at Horseshoe Valley Resort. I wasn't skiing or snow-boarding, but photographing the action on the hills from the sidelines. Actually, I was a little closer than the sidelines for some of the shots, as you will see in this slideshow:

The weather was beautiful and the boarders were very cooperative in showing me their 'stuff'. These were some of my favourite images of the day. I meet Durango as a puppy when photographing his owner's wedding a few years ago. He's turned into a very handsome young man - but still very much a puppy - as most Labs are! This was one of my favourite portraits of him.

A Conversation

Overhead a conversation between a photographer and a writer a few years ago. The writer was commenting on the photographer's work. "I'm very impressed with your work", he said. "You're photos are powerful, vibrant and very artistic. You must have an expensive camera!". The photographer replied, "Well thank you. I'm very impressed with your writing too. You must have an expensive type-writer!".

Makes you stop and think for a moment doesn't it. The camera, like the type-writer, is simply a tool. It's the person using that tool that makes the difference. Photography isn't about the camera, the lenses, or any of the other gadgets you have in a bag. It's the vision, the understanding of the subject and how you use the tools at hand that create a good photograph.

Wedding Professionalism

I've been hearing a lot of disturbing comments lately about wedding photographers. Not necessarily from brides and grooms, but from other 'professionals', like videographers, florist and even clergy!

With the advent of digital photography, it seems that more and more people are getting into wedding photography. The quality of digital cameras and all the technology built into them make it very difficult to take a bad photograph. But photographing a wedding is much more than simply getting a correct exposure and making sure the subject is in focus. Part of it is interacting, cooperating, and working with not only the bride and groom and their family, but all the other vendors that are working to make the day a special one for their client - which happens to be your client as well.

Some of the terms I'm hearing are obnoxious, intruding, rude, hateful, self-centered and other words that I care not to repeat. I believe that most 'professional' photographers are not this way. But there's a new breed of photographer that seems to feel that as the 'artist' they should have total and free control over every situation. The shot is the most important thing - no matter how it affects others.

My philosophy is that if you can help each other, we all benefit, including the bride, groom and everyone attending the wedding. If you need a particular shot, duck under the video camera rather than walk through it. Be quiet when standing beside them so your noises aren't interfering with their recording. If the florist is late delivering the flowers, don't curse them and complain to the bride, come up with poses that don't require flowers and use valuable time for those. Once the flowers arrive, create those portraits - and the flowers are even fresher looking. If the officiant says no flash photos during the vows... don't run up the aisle to photograph them with flash - shoot without flash from the back of the church. There's no sense in ticking off the minister. The bride and groom may not be back to that church again - but you may be!

All I'm saying is that to be a professional wedding photographer, a true professional, you have to treat everyone professionally and with respect for the job they are doing. It does your business no good to interfere with the other vendors of this special day. Work with them to provide the best possible event for your mutual client. You'll gain their respect and maybe next time, they'll be willing to work with you.

Guilbault receives Master of Photographic Arts

We are very pleased to announce that at the Professional Photographers of Canada convention on April 14, 2008, Mike Guilbault, MPA, APPO, received one of the highest awards within the Professional Photographers of Canada in the form of the Master of Photographic Arts.
Mike was presented the award at the Annual Awards Banquet by PPOC President, Walter E. Janzen, MPA, SPA, F.Ph., in London, Ontario. (photo by Helen Traczynski)

The Master of Photographic Arts (MPA) award is a follow-up to the Craftsman of Photographic Arts (CPA) which Mike earned in 2003. The award is presented to photographers within the association (PPOC) that have achieved a high level of skill demonstrated through images accepted into the National Print Salon of PPOC, held annually in conjunction with the convention. In addition, recipients must have provided service to the association or its provincial member associations, and by promoting professional photography within the community.

In recent years, Mike's work has received recognition through acceptance into the Annual Print Salon, receiving several Awards of Merit and Excellence, and the prestigious honour of acceptance into the Permanent Loan Collection of the Professional Photographers of Canada.

I'd like to take this moment to thank all my clients and friends for their support and business over the last year. Our studio has undergone some strategic changes and we've upgraded equipment and software to stay on top of the industry and provide the best possible product we can.

For 2008 we will be introducing some new and exciting products to our line including Limited Edition ArtBooks for family portraiture (we already produce these for weddings - and they're awesome!) and Engagement Portraits. Our B&W studio portraits are always popular and sessions have been steadily increasing over the last 6 months and are expected to be an even bigger hit in 2008. We're still offering our specials on "Three Generations" portraits and our very popular pet portrait project.

In 2003 the Greater Barrie Chamber of Commerce and the City of Barrie initiated a business awards program to recognize the contribution of local businesses to the continued growth and success of our community. Bell Canada, acknowledging the importance of such a program to Barrie's business community, signed on as the main sponsor immediately. Over the succeeding years, the Bell Canada Business Awards Gala has grown significantly in size and reputation throughout Barrie. With the enthusiastic support of the community, this annual event has become Barrie's premier business networking event. The 2007 event is planned for Thursday November 8th, 2007 in the Georgian College Gymnasium; it’s the 5th year of the awards and will be a very exciting event.

Each year we select specific dates and photograph family portraits at the park, typically Sunnidale Park in Barrie. Sunnidale has the best and most varied locations for a variety of family portraits, from landscaped lawn and flower beds, to rustic, woodland settings. October 13th is the date of our most popular photography workshop - The Fall Colour Workshop. Of course it's hard to predict where the fall colour will be on this date, but at this time of year, inspiration flows like no other time of the year. If the colour is in the trees - that's what we shoot. If it's on the ground, we'll be there too. This workshop will focus (pun intended) on composition using colour and creating a 'custom' negative or digital file, in camera, under whatever conditions prevail that day... and we go rain or shine.

My First Moose!

I've been to Algonquin Park many times but have never seen a moose in the wild, not even in a zoo for that matter. Last weekend I was driving through the park and within a short period of time I saw four! I found two (together) on my own, about 50' off the side of the road, and later on two more, that had other viewers already stopped. The two were a male & female, I assume 'couple' and the others were probably yearlings.

This photo is of the last one I saw. Managed to get quite a few shots, but this one of him trekking through the bog is my favourite.

Just received notification that "Empire" has been accepted into the Permanent Loan Collection of the Professional Photographers of Canada. This exhibit travels across Canada to display the best work of PPOC members and promote professional photography across the country. Quite an honour.

The 2007 National Image Competition of the Professional Photographers of Canada took place last week during the 2007 Annual Convention of the PPOC, in Winnipeg, MB.

Mike Guilbault, CPA, APPO,
a professional photographer from Barrie, Ontario, was awarded

First Place in the Architecture Class
for Professional Commercial Photography.

"EMPIRE"

Guilbault has been a professional photographer in Barrie for over 18 years and specializes in commercial, corporate and portrait photography. This photograph was taken in downtown Toronto, Ontario. The image was then digitally enhanced in PhotoShop to create a wholly new and unique image.

The competition features entries from across Canada in many different classes, including Commercial, Industrial, Corporate, Portrait and Wedding categories. Acceptance in the Salon signifies outstanding photography in the field and is limited to four submissions each year. Mike had two images accepted and exhibited in the National Imaging Salon, judged prior to the 2007 PPOC convention by a panel of Master Photographers from across the country.

New Website has launched

Well, it's not quite finished, but I decided to launch it anyway.... it's close enough. Same address as before, just updated, added to and trimmed down a little too. Pretty much all that's missing are some of the photo galleries. These will be added over the next week or two, so keep coming back and see what's new.

Let me know what you think (especially if you see any mistakes) and if there's anything you think I should add. I'd also like to get some feedback on the general look and feel of the site, especially from Windows users. Since I work on a Mac, it's sometimes hard to tell how things will look on a PC.

Canadian Accounting Software

In case you haven't heard... I am now an official reseller for MoneyWorks Accounting Software. Canadian accounting software for Mac computers on the OS-X platform (but it works on a PC too, if you really need it to). Being a dealer isn't new to me. I have, in the past, been the distributor and dealer for various products, all of which have been successful. Not one to let an opportunity pass by, I found the MoneyWorks software to be exceptional and believe in it enough to endorse it personally.
